What we do

Scotts Valley Educational Foundation is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit fundraising organization that raises money for Scotts Valley Public Schools.

Who we are

Our board is made up of 17 – 19 members. We have parents of our students, community members, teachers, principals, and administration from within our school district.

Our executives

We’re always looking for more help, and we have some openings available on our current board for next year. The board consists of the following positions: President, Vice President, Recording Secretary, Treasurer, Auditor, Marketing Coordinator, Volunteer Coordinator, and Directors.

How we raise our money

We host key fundraising events such as the Mt. Charlie Challenge, Ice Cream Social, Christmas Tree Lot, and Letter Campaign. We also are often a part of other organizations events. For example, the Rotary had Oktoberfest and contributed to SVEF. Kiwanis held Music in the Park in combination with SVEF. San Augustin shared their donations from the Angels Auction with SVEF. The Tutoring Club and Elite Martial Arts donate member initiation fees to SVEF when mentioning us.

What we do with the money

We keep a reserve of cash for operating expenses. We roll a percentage of our annual income into our Endowment Fund that was created in 2009. The balance we can distribute to Scotts Valley Unified School District to save a program of our choosing.

How we decide what to fund

Every spring we research and analyze what is needed to help the schools. We get recommendations from the principals and we discuss as a board to make our decisions. We traditionally have not funded salaries directly. We have funded saving the Music Program, Libraries, Technology, and the Dollar-a-Day Program. We try to contribute to all four schools in our district evenly.

We occasionally have a donation that is given for a particular school and we just pass it through. As an example, for a few years The Community Foundation of Santa Cruz had a client that wanted to donate a fairly large sum anonymously to Brook Knoll Elementary School and SVMS. There was a few stipulations and we had to handle special reporting on it. For SVEF it was a pass through. We gained community awareness and were able to handle the donations as a non-profit entity.

Going forward

We will continue to have our regular fundraisers. We will handle the Dollar A Day program for our district. Our district needs to raise $950,000 for the general funding for year 2011/12 in order to stay where we will be for year 2010/11. We need to do this through a Dollar A Day campaign in conjunction with the SVUSD moving forward on a Parcel Tax.

To get involved

We are have our next SVEF Meeting on April 15th and there is a collective group of parents, teachers, board members and administration personnel coming up with the plan on what steps to implement for Dollar a Day. Email Charlotte if you would like to be involved in the campaign.

For Parcel Tax campaign you can contact Michael Shulman, to get involved.

Donate now to Scotts Valley Educational Foundation via mail or use the donate button on any page on this website. You may also do a recurring payment through our website through our Help Us page.

Many people ask, “What does SVEF do with the money raised each year?” Here are a few of the ways we’ve helped our schools:

$61,000 went to restore the libraries to 100%, this year.

$80,000 was donated to help with the technology upgrade for our school district.

$10,000 went towards after-school athletics and school supplies.

$5,000 for art and music programs.

$5,000 for special education programs.

$10,000 towards changing classroom locks and installing blinds for security.

$10,000 to purchase additional computer equipment, and some science department textbooks.

$20,000 for wireless internet, outdoor safety lighting, sound systems for performances, and DVD players for classrooms.

This funding was only for the last couple of years, as an example. As you can see we have been very busy putting your dollars to good work.

Our top fundraiser is the letter campaign that is going on right now. Please consider making a tax deductible donation today. Another big fundraising event is our annual Mtn. Charlie Challenge. It will be held May 2nd this coming year, more information will follow soon.

I would like to give you an update on what is currently happening at Scotts Valley Educational Foundation (SVEF).

Last week, November 15th, 2006, we had a SVEF meeting and stuffing party all in one.

We worked on the Annual Fundraising Letter Campaign. Marshall thought we folded about 4,000 letters and we stuffed a bunch of the envelopes as well. So we made good progress. We are still working on finishing up the stuffing and hope to do the labeling soon.

The Holiday Tree Lot is coming together. We had volunteers signing up at the meeting using http://www.mysignup.com/sveftreelot to volunteer and help. We are working on advertising in the Banner and the Sentinel. Signs are being finalized. Bake goods are planned to be available. Gloves and twine have been donated by Ace Hardware in Scotts Valley. A big thank you to Wayne Shaffer for letting us use his lot to host our event.

Yesterday Ernie Alexander spent all day wiring the tree lot. Kiwanis has brought the tents, tables and other goodies. Brian Bothman’s group brought fencing, astroturf and more. Shannon seems like she is always there to help. Thank you everyone!

Please tell all your friends and family to come get a tree from us to benefit our schools. If you would like to volunteer to work the lot, contact Donna Humphries at dmhumphries@aim.com or go online and signup at http://www.mysignup.com/sveftreelot.

We will have another meeting Thursday, November 30, 2006 at 7:00pm at the district office. At this meeting we will mainly be working on:

Complete the labeling of the envelopes and mail them on December 1st.

Address any needs for the Holiday Tree Lot.

An agenda will come out a few days before to give you more meeting details.

Thanks for being a part of our foundation!

Dear Scotts Valley Community,

It is with our deepest gratitude that we thank you for your generous support of the 2004 Dollar a Day Campaign. Because of your selfless donations, schools in the Scott Valley Unified School District are able to provide essential services to our students. Fortunately, the cuts sent down to us by the state of California appear non-existent to our student population.

Your thoughtfulness has allowed the continuation of many vital student services. We can continue to have counselors and library clerks in our schools. Both the high school and middle school have assistant principals. Art and music will again be offered at both Vine Hill and Brook Knoll. Our students in grades kindergarten through third grade will reap the benefit of the twenty to one class size reduction program. For all of this, we thank you.

Scotts Valley Schools continue to be the best and provide our students with an outstanding education. The Board of Trustees, the Superintendent and the entire Scotts Valley staff thank you for your commitment to the students of our schools. Because of your generosity, we will continue to do so. Additionally, as we embark on the Dollar a Day Campaign 2005, we look forward to your support.

Please join us for a celebration of our community’s Dollar a Day accomplishments at the annual Bean Creek Run on Sunday, October 3, 2004 at Skypark. Stop by our Dollar a Day Celebration Booth!

Sincerely,

Kathy Dunton, Vine Hill
Kathy Frandle, Brook Knoll
Mary Lonhart, SVMS
Nancy Serigstad, SVHS
