Each of the approximately 100 local artists and artisans will be donating a piece of their artwork to the raffle. Raffle tickets can be purchased at Artisans for $2 each or 5 for $5. Simply place your raffle tickets into the prize box next to the artwork you like most! With so many artists participating, you have many chances to win some fabulous items! The raffle will run from Friday, November 25th through Sunday, December 18th. There is no limit to how many tickets you put into a single piece. All proceeds will benefit the Scotts Valley Educational Foundation, which supports critical programs at all our SV schools. This year, the Foundation was able to contribute $55,000 to the libraries keeping them open each day at each site. An additional $44,000 was provided to offset the loss of counseling services at each school. An additional $30,000 was contributed to support technology needs at each school.

The drawing for the winner will be December 18th at 4:00 pm.

Scotts Valley Artisans is located in the King’s Village Shopping Center on Mt. Hermon Road, next to Erik’s Deli.

As we settle into the school year, I wanted to thank the Ed. Foundation for supporting the SVMS library. Our students depend on the accessibility of a wide range of titles in the library.

Last year, on average, students and staff checked out between 800-900 titles per month with approximately 45-50% of students checking out books. The library laptop computers are utilized by roughly 350-400 students per month.

Please share this heartfelt thanks with the members of SVEF. We appreciate your support of the district libraries-they truly make a difference in our students’ educational experience.

Please find attached a letter from one of our students who visits the SVMS library on a daily basis.

In appreciation,

Elizabeth Poser
SVMS Librarian

The free “Music at Skypark” concert series benefiting local public schools continues on July 31 with perennial favorite Houserockers and its foot-stomping rock sound. The band won KFOX’s 2010 Last Band Standing contest, and will be appearing for the third consecutive year at Music at Skypark. Opening the concert will be The Coffis Brothers, featuring the folk rock sound of Jamie and Kellen Coffis from Ben Lomond.

Music at Skypark concerts are on the last Sundays of June, July, August and September. After the July 31 concert, the series returns on August 28 and September 25. All concerts run from 3:30 to about 7:30 pm at Skypark in Scotts Valley. There’s no admission charge to the concerts, but all net profits from food, alcohol, t-shirt and raffle sales support the music programs at local public schools. Proceeds from last year’s concerts are credited with maintaining music programs at local schools.

Concert promoters Scotts Valley Kiwanis Foundation and Scotts Valley Arts Commission have been joined by these generous sponsors: Skov Winery, Santa Cruz Pizza Company, Baskin Robbins, Dawgs, Small Business Consulting, Inc., Green Waste Recovery, Scotts Valley Parks Advocates, Universal Audio, Knox Roofing, Elite Martial Arts Academy, Scotts Valley Dental Care, Beaman Insurance Agency, Corrine Cline-Fortunato, DDS, John Stevens, DDS, Scotts Valley Window, Door & Skylight, LMC Financial, UPS Store, Stevenson Landscaping, Inc, Zinnia’s, Scotts Valley Performing Arts Association, Brass Key, Mint, Scarborough Lumber, Ralston Rods, Tackle & Archery , Anthony Giannotti, OD, Steven J.

Recently, an audio recording of the March 8th meeting was posted to the district’s website and Steve Trefethen has highlighted some of the items he felt were of specific interest with a new blog entry. If anything please listen to Karen Jelcick’s comments regarding the severity of the budget crisis particularly in relation to the state ability to extend existing taxes via a June ballot initiative. If such an initiative fails to get on the ballot in June or fails as a result of voting the impact will be substantial and are detailed in the supporting documentation referred to in the blog post.
